Tips for Fall Weather Driving

Deer Crossing
As fall approaches and the leaves start to change, so should your driving habits. Here are some common sense driving tips to help you prepare for the cooler weather.

  • Fall brings the first frost so be aware of slippery conditions. Frost can make bridges and overpasses extremely slick. Use extra caution.
  • Fall is peak season for deer. If you see one cross the road, be extra alert and proceed slowly as they often travel in groups.
  • Falling wet leaves create slippery conditions and can be as slippery as ice. Slow down and allow yourself extra time to stop.
  • Wet leaves can cover traffic lines and markings on the roads and can obscure pot holes and bumps. Use extra caution on unfamiliar roads.
  • Wet leaves can get clogged under your wiper blades impeding visibility. Be sure to clear your windshield before drive.
  • Never drive over leaf piles on the side of the road. They are a magnet for children playing and they could be hiding in that pile of leaves.
  • Don’t park on leaf piles as they can become a fire hazard against catalytic converters.
  • Be aware of intense sun glare. Have sunglasses or visor ready.
  • Make sure your tires have sufficient tread and proper tire pressure.
  • Your brakes are the most important safety system on your car. They should be checked at each oil change.
  • Check your wiper blades. They should be changed every 6 months or sooner if they become cracked or start streaking.
  • Be sure to check your headlights, tail lights and turn signals to make sure they are all working properly.

Best of all, buckle up, stay safe and use common sense. Enjoy the crisp fall weather and beautiful foliage that this time of year brings.
